Neurotic

Marc Stein said this about the Dallas-Cleveland game, a comment that is too true (at least of me):
James almost single-handedly derailed a juggernaut that freaks out its fans if it doesn't win in a walk.
The game included Lebron making what I would describe as the best game dunk I've ever seen. (My brother thinks I need some perspective, but I'm not sure.)

But don't worry –– Stein still takes Dirk as his MVP.

Put me in that category too. I get nervous if any team is within 10 points.

The Dirk for MVP talk is definitely deserved, with as many games that he has flirted with a triple double in the past month. I'm too lazy to look up the numbers, but I would guess that Dirk scores more than Nash, rebounds a lot more than Nash, and now his assists are climbing too. MVP...MVP...MVP...

I am just as hyped as anyone about Dirk's season and the Mavs all together, but I hope we're not setting ourselves up for disappointment if we don't win in the finals. Anything less than a championship this year will be extremely disappointing. I'll even say more disappointing than how we lost last year.

Of course we're setting ourselves up for disappointment if they lose, but that's the only way to really have the most fun if they win.

Sports are always like that –– you invest an insane amount of emotional energy in one team out of a league of 30 where 29 go home disappointed. You can be a bandwagon fan instead if you want, but then it's like you made a lower investment, so you get a lower payoff. But if you throw yourself totally in on a 30:1 shot, you get a great payoff if your team gets the championship.

Dallas has put together a remarkable year, showing a lot of determination after last year's loss. Because of that, if they don't win it all this year, I'm not sure how they'll even show up to play next season. The thought of starting all over again for 82 more games of suspense is kind of excruciating.

Yes, you're right, that's what I love about sports too. Part of the fun is also the anxiety that comes with thinking, "What if we don't win?" and talking about how disappointed we'll be (think back to the anxiety before game 7 against San Antonio last year). Loyally following a sports team is my favorite form of entertainment.

Here's a nice stat. On espn's list of PER ratings, Dirk (4th on the list) has easily the lowest turnover average of any player in the top 20.

I went to the gym last night to run on the treadmill. The Heat and Pistons were playing. I'm sure I would have liked to be a Heat fan last year but I left the gym thinking how great it is to be a Mavs fan. It seemed like all I saw was missed shot after missed shot from both teams. It was pretty brutal. Even if the Mavs loose there has to be something to say about a great, entertaining regular season.
